See how a title and description render in a Google result and an X card, with truncation measured in pixels rather than characters, and a length scorer for each.

A description containing a number outperforms one containing an adjective, and it survives truncation better. Whether the description contains a digit is one of the checks in the metadata group.

How to use it

  1. 01Paste your title and descriptionOr type them, and watch where truncation falls.
  2. 02Watch the pixel meter, not the character countGoogle truncates on rendered width. A 60 character title of narrow letters fits where a 55 character title of wide ones does not.
  3. 03Check the description contains a numberA number is the cheapest specificity available and it survives truncation better than an adjective.
  4. 04Confirm the head term comes before the brandThe first 60 characters carry nearly all the weight.

Questions

How long should a title tag be?

A title tag should fit within roughly 580 pixels of rendered width, which is usually 55 to 60 characters. Measuring in pixels rather than characters is what matters, because Google truncates on width.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Meta descriptions do not rank. They earn the click, and they are what an answer engine most often quotes when summarising a result.

Why does my description get rewritten?

Google rewrites a description when it judges the page has a better answer to the specific query. Writing a description that is specific and contains a number reduces how often that happens.

Where this comes from

This tool uses the same modules SEO for Solos sells in the Code Kit, so the output and the product cannot diverge. The reasoning behind it is in the playbook.
